I used a photograph of a mountain to illustrate the plot elements to my students. They can see how a plot follows a mountain shape. I added the text at the different relative locations, giving each text a different color. I used GIMP for this assignment.
I'm glad you had a chance to explore using GIMP. This is a good use of the teaching technique of using metaphor to teach a concept to students. You might consider adding in an image of a story character (or, better yet, a student dressed as a story character) to move along the mountain (especially great if you have an interactive whiteboard).
